NDDC contract awards claim: Reps to file criminal complaint lawsuit against Akpabio

The House of Representatives has resolved to sue the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, over a controversial claim he made earlier this week.

Akpabio claimed on Monday, July 20, 2020 that lawmakers of the National Assembly are the biggest beneficiaries of contract awards from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He made the claim while appearing before a House Committee investigating claims of financial misappropriation in the NDDC.

The minister's claim caused a public stir against the National Assembly, and The House of Reps issued Akpabio a 48-hour ultimatum on Tuesday, July, 21 to release a detailed list of lawmakers who have benefited, an ultimatum he has failed to respond to.

During plenary on Thursday, July 23, House Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, said he has directed the Clerk of the House to engage legal counsel to initiate a suit of criminal complaint of perjury against Akpabio.

He said counsel has also been directed to, at the same time, explore the possibility of a civil defamation suit against Akpabio, a former Akwa Ibom governor.

"The House of Representatives is a public trust placed in our care for the duration of our tenure in office.

"We must prove ourselves worthy of the public trust, or risk the censure of history.

"Therefore, we will resist every attempt to undermine this institution," he said.
