Akeredolu Confronts DIG Police Over Amotekun
Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu Wednesday morning confronted the Deputy Inspector General of Police Leye Oyebade saying the Southwest security network Amotekun cannot be subsumed under the Nigerian Police Force.
Akeredolu said the DIG was wrong to have said that the regional security arrangement would have to come under the police saying there can only be collaboration and cooperation to secure the local communities.
Featuring on a live television show on Channels TV Akeredolu said whoever has issues with the present nomenclature of Amotekun can only go to court to challenge its configurations.
"This is backed by Law," Akeredolu fumed.
"We will not collapse Amotekun into Community Police. We are not people that the IG will dictate to. Amotekun is different. Community police is different. If the IG does not understand, he will go one day and another IG will come who would understand," he said
The Governor said on the issue of arms carrying, there has not been any solid agreements saying however that Amotekun operatives may have to be allowed to carrying some kinds of arms.
He said they currently carry what he called "non-prohibited arms" adding that
"With these, we won't be able to match these bandits because of their weaponry. It's going to be suicidal to confront the bandits with our non-prohibited arms."
