Enough Of Blood Shedding In Nigeria, Support For Total Police Reform In Nigeria Says Fatoba
Justifiably so, Nigerian youths have been protesting and making demands to end police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria. The unity of young protesters and other sympathisers across the country, the coordination and hitherto non-violent protestation gives a ray of hope for a better and united Nigeria. Sadly, the otherwise peaceful protest was infiltrated by fifth columnists and became violent, occasioning loss of lives and properties. As a parent, I am very disturbed and worried about the turn of violence and the reports that soldiers opened fire on armless protesters.
The use of live ammunition and killing of protesters by the law enforcement agents diminishes our democracy, it questions our civilisation and humanity in the 21st century. It should be condemned by all. Regrettably, this action gives credence to the allegation of police brutality and #endsars agitations. While commiserating with all the victims of #EndSARS and #Endpolicebrutality struggle, I strongly call for a thorough investigation of the shootings and killings of protesters with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Without any iota of doubt, I support the agitation of Nigerian youths, for a better society where equity, fairness, peace and justice shall reign, a better society where the children of nobody will be given equal opportunity to be somebody, a society where rule of law and not rule of men will prevail. However, I abhor violence in any form or shade. Violence will only help to destroy that which we seek to build and take us many years backward because it is easier to destroy than to build.
You have “soro-soke”, we have heard you loud and clear. Please, give the leadership opportunity to address your concerns and demands. It is time to come together and build the Nigeria of our dream. The challenges may be daunting but not insurmountable. Let us build on this momentum, in a violence free atmosphere, to make Nigeria a better place for all. With your cooperation, I am firmly committed to this.
While calling on the youth to bring an end to the protest, I equally charge the law enforcement agents to be alive to their responsibilities, maintaining the peace and orderliness in the society by observing the global best practices standards.
Enough of blood shedding in our land.
Signed:
Hon. Olusola Steve Fatoba
