Buhari sends Bill on extension of teachers’ retirement age to Senate


President Muhammadu Buhari has transmitted an Executive Bill to the Senate, seeking extension of retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

Lawan explained that the bill would harmonised the retirement age for teachers in Nigeria.

According to him, the move to increase the retirement age and service years for teachers is in pursuant to section 58(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“Transmission of the harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria bill 2021 to the National Assembly for consideration.

“Pursuant to section 58 (2 ) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I forward herewith the harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria Bill, 2021 for consideration by the Senate.

“The harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria Bill 2021 seeks to increase the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, and also increase the possible years of service from 35 to 40 years.

“While appreciating your usual expeditious consideration of this submission, please accept the assurances of my highest consideration,” Buhari said.

Lawan also during the plenary, referred Buhari’s request for confirmation of Maj.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to Senate Committees on Defense and Army.

The Defense Committee led by Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto), was mandated to lead the screening for the newly appointed COAS.

Coronavirus: Ekiti Places Ban On Traditional Festivals In Towns And Villages

Ekiti Government on Saturday directed traditional rulers in towns and villages to either postpone or cancel for the rest of the year, all pending local festivals in their domains to curb the spread of Coronavirus. The State Coordinator of COVID-19 Task Force Response Team, Prof Bolaji Aluko, made the announcement in a statement in Ado Ekiti. He disclosed that Ekiti State had cumulatively recorded 78 positive Coronavirus cases, with 29 active, 2 deaths, and 47 discharged, warning that the cases can rise dramatically if public assemblies continued unchecked. He said as the state was gradually entering the full blown season of Traditional Festival, therefore, travels from within Ekiti State and various parts of Nigeria by indigenes and visitors to the various towns and villages during this period of the pandemic, had started to occur. FUOYE Classes, Labs Shut indefinitely By Ekiti Govt. Over Non-Compliance With COVID-19 Safety Rules

The Ekiti State COVID-19 Taskforce has shut physical classes and laboratories of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Oye Local Government Area of the state over noncompliance with guidelines to contain the spread of the virus. The indefinite closure was attributed to the filling up of the institution’s lecture halls and laboratories by students of the school who were neither wearing their face masks nor observed physical distancing. The students were also spotted in clusters while others milled around on the campus with no regard to safety guidelines. The Coordinator of the Ekiti State COVID-19 Task Force, Prof Bolaji Aluko made this known to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Friday when he and the SSA on Public Health, Dr. Jimlas Ogunsakin, paid an unannounced visit to the university.
